Summary: This publication documents the survey exhibition Shirin Neshat. Frauen in Gesellschaft in the Kunsthalle Tübingen (2017). It assembles important works from all of Shirin Neshat's creative phases, from the iconic typographically inscribed photographs of the Women of Allah series to the multiple award winning single and multi-channel video installations, to the monumental blocks of work like The Book of Kings and the new productions from 2016/17 which have never been seen in Europe. The programmatic title of the exhibition identifies two recurring themes in the oeuvre of the artist: the role of the woman in Islamic societies and the repercussions of traumatic, diaspora related experiences which a woman carries with her from that point on for the rest of her life.
