Heath and colleagues' chronology of the last 300 years of industrial production is mistitled; it is not the history of "industrial design" but of "industry" as seen by designers. Divided into "Background History and Technology," "Wood," "Metal," "Ceramic," and "Glass," it focuses on the evolution of technology in industry. Sections are chronological with an example selected from each decade and presented with black-and-white photographs, as well as orthographic drawings meticulously created by the authors and their students over the last 30 years. The authors from the Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark selected objects that exemplify innovation in terms of function, technology, and materials, thereby ignoring the decorative arts and stylistic movements of design history. Instead, the objects selected are those without ornamentation, with simple form and a focus on utility. This book is most like John B. Heskett's Industrial Design (1980) and least like Edward Lucie-Smith's A History of Industrial Design (CH, May'84). The book under review will help design students understand materials and manufacturing technology; it will also interest engineers, technology students, and those intrigued with the history of technology and the development of modern manufacturing methods.
