Long time comin'

Brand, Dionne, 1953- (Added Author). Hubert, Nicole. (Added Author). Nolan, Faith, 1958- (Added Author). Channer, Grace (Added Author). National Film Board of Canada. Studio D. (Added Author).

Summary: There is a cultural revolution going on in Canada and Faith Nolan and Grace Channer are on the leading edge. In Long Time Comin' these two African-Canadian lesbian artists give back to art its most urgent meanings--commitment and passion. They shun Eurocentric notions of art as devoid of political intent; rather they embrace its possibilities for changing the world--and they have a world to change. Channer's large evocative canvasses relay her world views, from discovering her sexuality to recovery of her African heritage. Nolan's music speaks passionately to Black people's daily struggles and to a lesbian feminist vision. As the film unfolds, one comes to realize that, for Faith and Grace, their political and sexual being is inseparable from their creative process. By locating their work in issues of race, gender, class and sexuality, Channer and Nolan challenge the complacency of Canadian cultural power structures.
