Summary:

As Laurent-Marc Fisher states, "Cities are man's nature," but as the urbanization of the planet intensifies and natural resources diminish, the way we think about and build in our cities is increasingly being questioned. This program interviews city planners, architects, bureaucrats, and engineers in Europe who are creating innovative solutions and designs for cities, transportation infrastructures, public spaces, and private homes as well as alternative, sustainable, ecological and healthy building materials, processes, and working and living environments. Features architects Norman Foster, Will Alsop, Richard Rogers and Stefan Behling in the UK, Françoi̇s Tirot and Fisher in France (Paris and environs), Werner Sobek in Stuttgart, and Stephan Benish in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Profiles the Millau Viaduct, the different philosophies behind the Barnsley Project (densification and concentration of population, city wall) versus the New City of Sénart (large land mass, central square, trial buildings), Arup Campus (commercial sustainable building), House Sobek (minimal materials, zero net grid user), and the Alterra Institut in Wageningen ("green lung" atrium, seasonal changes in internal environment). Also touches on: Chiswick Park (UK), HQE (High Quality Environment) standards, Commerzbank (Frankfurt), the Gherkin and the Greater London Authority buildings and Kew Gardens in London.
