Summary: A giant factory looms over the small town. It clunks and bangs and belches out an endless cloud of smoke from the enormous stack. A whistle blast signals the end of another dreary day for the introverted chimney operator, Tim Midley. He's a good boy and a dutiful son to his love-sick mother, Mildred. Overcome by the noxious fumes that seep through her bedroom window, Mildred is rushed to hospital. That same night, Anita Newlove, the fading stripper with an attitude, ends up at the Midley household, settles into Mildred's empty bed and refuses to leave. Gradually losing control of his world, Tim struggles to oust the hot-tempered Anita. His troubles are compounded by increasing sexual advances from Mrs. Friendly, the wife of the corner grocer. Finally, Mildred's dream, Anita's scheme and Tim's hopes are realized by events set in motion by the grocer's wife.
