Summary: When the European Union was formed it was supposed to unite the member states of Europe in trade and finance. But critics argued it was holding Britain back. In the summer of 2016, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine if it should remain in the EU. That campaign was called Brexit, and it has divided the British people as much as any controversy could.
