Canada Reads 2020 : Eden Robinson on Son of a Trickster

Summary: In Son of a Trickster, celebrated Haisla and Heiltsuk author Eden Robinson tells the story of a 16-year-old named Jared who is known in his community for making the best weed cookies and for having a scary mom. Jared takes care of his struggling family the best he can and shrugs off the fact that the ravens are talking to him. In this video, Eden talks about her novel and shares her preference for not working with an outline. She also describes her methodical old-school method of figuring out pacing - it involves scissors and tape!Warning: The novel Son of a Trickster contains scenes of sex, violence and substance abuse, as well as coarse language. Teachers who are considering reading the full novel in class need to take steps to prepare students for sensitive material. The book backgrounder and author video available here address themes from the novel but do not include any explicit content. The book excerpt contains some coarse language.
