Women painting women

Karnes, Andrea, (editor,, writer of added commentary.). Amos, Emma, 1938-2020 (artist,, writer of added commentary.). Ringgold, Faith, (artist,, writer of added commentary.). Simpson, Lorna, 1960- (artist,, writer of added commentary.). Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, (issuing body,, host institution.).

Summary: "Women Painting Women explores nearly fifty female artists who choose women as subject matter in their works. International in scope and spanning the late 1960s to the present, Women Painting Women recognizes female perspectives that have been underrepresented in the history of postwar figuration. Painting is the focus, as traditionally it has been a privileged medium for portraiture, particularly for white men. The women in this presentation range from early trailblazers like Emma Amos, Alice Neel, and May Stevens to emerging artists such as Jordan Casteel, Jenna Gribbon, and Apolonia Sokol. Some, such as Jenny Saville, work on large canvasses, producing images that dwarf the space around them, while others, including Somaya Critchlow, paint on a modest scale that invites close viewing. All place the idea of women--their bodies, gestures, and individuality--at the forefront." -- Provided by publisher.
