Female masculinity Cover Image Book Book

Female masculinity / Judith Halberstam.

Summary:

This study of "masculinity without men" explores gender performances in which women assume masculine identities. The diversity of gender expressions among masculine women is charted from pre-lesbian nineteenth-century practices to contemporary drag king performances. Halberstam argues for a more nuanced understanding of "butchness" than is popularly permitted under the current régime of polarized gender identities.
