- General Note:
- ”'Patterns' explores the anonymity inherent in urban space alongside the fear generated by the anonymous figure as other (anarchist/terrorist). Veiled faces/identities unsettle the norms of “transparency” in an era of the proliferation of unveiling resulting from the exhibitionism/voyeurism of social media. Veiled figures create anxiety amongst those who subscribe to these norma as truth (a version of the Heideggerian sense of alethea as dis/closure). The veiled interloper is thus unveiled as not being just another anonymous figure in the mass of urban density. What is seen and what is not seen, who is seen and who is not seen become points of legality (e.g. in the case of Bill C-309). This piece consists of two parts: photographs of people wearing knitted balaclavas against the backdrop of Vancouver’s areas of change/development/gentrification, and a poem de-/pre-scribing movement through the city streets as a political act (drawing on Paul Virilio’s theory of Dromology).” -- introduction.
