Healing Justice video / Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Native peoples believe our justice system has failed them. Healing Justice looks at the native model of justice which is based on reconciliation and harmony rather than punishment. To find out how this system works and what we can learn from it, we travel to the remote Native community of Muskrat Dam and to the Aboriginal Legal Services in Toronto. Cases examined illustrate how a traditional holistic approach can work to establish an individual's sense of responsibility even away from a solely Native community. We also meet judge Don Fraser who has had extensive dealings with Native offenders. He points out that punishment is a poor deterrent to those who are already self-destructive and sees great value in being able to offer choices beyond mere punishment.
